Freedom Quilt Pattern Posters, Presentation, Reading Passage & More!

This resource guides students in learning about freedom quilt patterns possibly used as part of the Underground Railroad. Learners will discover the hidden messages in these designs and how they possibly helped guide freedom seekers to safety. Other secret messages including Follow the Drinking Gourd lyrics and Underground Railroad code words are also introduced.

Applicable for social studies lessons on slavery, the Underground Railroad, Black History Month or general American history, this resource blends history with creativity to make learning more engaging.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

• 10 Freedom Quilt Patterns with Meanings – Each pattern poster comes in both a color and a black & white version. A blank template poster is also included where students can design their own quilt square. Additionally, those squares can be cut out and assembled together to make a collaborative classroom quilt.
  
• Create Your Own Quilt Scene – Paper scene shows the front of a house with a quilt hanging from the porch. Two options are available.
  1.) 9-square grid scene: Students draw and color to create their own quilt squares.
  2.) 6-square gride scene: Students draw and color the quilt squares that they create onto foldable paper templates.
  
• 2-page Reading Passage - Includes comprehension questions with answer key.
  
• Worksheet - Secret Codes of the Underground Railroad
  
• Lyrics Page - Follow the Drinking Gourd (Note: Lyrics vary slightly between sources as this was passed down orally long before it was written down.)
  
• Slideshow Presentation - Secrets of the Underground Railroad slideshow offered in both PowerPoint and Google Slides.
